SLED’s Online Interactive Learning platform (SOIL) trains educators in South African Sign Language (SASL). This trail-blazing digital programme upskills educators who work in schools for the Deaf to be able to use and understand South African Sign Language (SASL) – the language of their Deaf learners. The platform offers live sessions led by Deaf facilitators, online learning SASL video content and approved classroom materials. Courses offered take the educator from basic SASL skills proficiency, through a deeper linguistic understanding of the language, to being able to teach and assess SASL as a first language subject. By equipping educators with these skills, SOIL: SLED is opening pathways for Deaf learners to become literate, more independent and improve their prospects for employment.
